Corneal Irregularities and Ocular Surface Disease

The cornea plays a key role vision, it is responsible for as much as 75% of the eye’s total focusing power. It protects the eye from germs and dirt, that can harm the eye. It also, shields the eye from damaging ultraviolet light from the sun.  Similar to a camera, the lens and cornea acts as the lens on a camera. The retina would be the image sensor (or film). If the image is not properly focused, the retina has a blurry image

Symptoms of cornea problems include

Fatigue, headaches, and nausea
Inflammation or redness in the eye
Blurry or reduced vision
Eye pain
Sensitivity to light

Irregularities in the cornea are common and can cause serious problems. It interferes with the light being properly transmitted to the retina, which impedes with your vision. It is important to see a professional as soon as possible. With proper treatment many situations can be restored to normal.

Ocular Surface Disease encompasses many conditions and diseases affecting the cornea. Including dry eye syndrome, allergies, inflammation of the cornea (Keratitis), meibomian gland dysfunction blepharitis, rosaceous, immunological conditions such as Sjogren’s Syndrome, and Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid. Many of these conditions are becoming more prevalent and are going undiagnosed. It is vital to have regular comprehensive eye exams.
