To help raise awareness and educate parents, Lake Nona Eye Care celebrates Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month, to highlight the importance of healthy vision for our children.

A high percent of our children’s learning is done visually. Having an eye care professional test your child’s vision, can mean greater success at school. Several learning disabilities can actually be undetected vision problems.

A comprehensive eye exam is the best way to have a vision problem diagnosed. Ophthalmology Times shares some signs a child with a vision issue may have.

What do your child’s eyes look like?

• Eyes don’t line up, one eye appears crossed or looks outward;
• Eyelids are red-rimmed, crusted, or swollen; or
• Eyes are watery or red (inflamed).

How does your child act?

• Rubs eyes frequently;
• Closes or covers one eye;
• Tilts head or thrusts head forward;
• Has trouble reading or doing other close-up work, or holds objects close to eyes to see;
• Blinks more than usual or seems cranky when doing close-up work; or
• Squints eyes or frowns.

The latest estimate by the American Ophthalmology reveals that 80% of preschoolers have not had their eyes examined.

Let Not Forget About Eye Safety for Our Children

Every year there are as many as 42,000 sports related eye injuries, children make up most of this very  high number!

As a parent or guardian you can help our children keep their eye safe for a lifetime.

When children participate in sports and recreational activity, make sure they have protective eye wear. Even in the pool where there is a lot of chlorine.

Protect their eyes from the harmful UV light by wearing sunglasses when they go outside.

Ensure children play with age appropriate toys, protruding and sharp part can easily damage an eye.
