It is extremely important for everyone to have regular comprehensive eye exams. But there are times when you need to make an appointment with your Optometrist between those routine visits.

How often do I need an eye exam?

If you are not ‘at risk’, the American Optometric Academy those from age 6 to 60, have a comprehensive eye exam at least every 2 years. Those ‘at risk’, may need to schedule visits more often.

Who is ‘at risk’?

There are many factors that can have a big impact on a person’s vision. Such as hypertension, diabetes, and a family history of diseases, macular degeneration and glaucoma. Several prescription medications have side effects that can be eye related.

When to schedule your eye exam earlier

There are many instances when you shouldn’t wait until your next scheduled visit to get your eyes checked out.

Chronic Headaches

Though headaches can be the result of several reasons, eye strain is a big issue. Especially from working on computer screens and time spent on smart phones.

Squinting more than usual

Whether you’ve never worn glasses or need your current prescription is outdated, if you find yourself squinting to read your phone or road signs, it is time to visit the eye doctor.

Eye infection

If you are experiencing any unusual discharge, pain, redness, sensitivity to light, blurred vision, or dry eyes, it can be an infection. Your eyes are too valuable to put at risk, an infection can lead to vision loss and even blindness.

Floaters and flashes of light

Though a couple of floaters can be normal, they aren’t usually a problem. But you should schedule an appointment if you suddenly experience several new floaters. Especially if they are accompanied by a loss of peripheral vision or bright flashes of light.
