March is Save Your Vision month, aiming to increase awareness of eye health and the importance of regular comprehensive eye exams. This year the American Optometric Association is focusing on the impact of ‘blue light’ on our overall health. With computers being a big part of everyday life, the risk of eye damage and strain is higher than ever.

According to the AOA Eye-Q survey data, “the average American spends seven hours per day using digital devices. Overexposure to blue light due to smartphones, tablets and other technology use for extended periods of time can cause vision damage, sleep problems and more. By analyzing data, research and trends, this campaign will provide tips on preventing digital eye strain while at home or work.”

Vision Taken for Granted

With so much of our lives based on visual stimulation, from the moment we wake up, get dressed, drive, go to work or school, reading, to entertainment, it doesn’t make sense to take it for granted. Many of us don’t take action until something goes wrong and we start to have trouble with a daily activity.

It is important to catch any issues in their early stages, while there is still time to take corrective measure. Comprehensive eye exams can also check for other diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and glaucoma.

Eye Care and Computers

Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), result when you focus on a computer screen for an extended period of time. It can result in a host of issues including, headaches, dry, irritated eyes, shoulder and neck pain, eye strain and dizziness.

Studies have found looking at computer screens on a daily basis can take a toll on your eyes, CVS affects almost 90% of office workers.

“As more people spend their days at work on a computer and their free time on handheld devices, doctors of optometry are seeing more patients who are experiencing digital eye strain,” said Steven A. Loomis, O.D., president of the AOA. “The problem can be relieved by taking simple steps. Just looking away from the computer for brief periods of time throughout the day can help with discomfort and long term eye problems.”
