Cataracts are the primary cause of vision issues with people of 40 years old and the main cause of blindness in the world. Today over 22 million Americans are affected by cataracts. According to the Prevent Blindness America, by the year 2020 that number is estimated to jump to 30 million.

What Causes Cataracts

The eye works similar to a camera, focusing both far away and close up. The lenses in the eyes are made up of protein and water. The protein is precisely arranged as to let light pass through it while keeping it clear.

It’s unknown why, but as we age the protein can start to clump together forming small cloudy areas in the lens. This cloudiness in the lens is a cataract, overtime it grows larger making it harder to see. Some risk factors include; hypertension, diabetes, obesity, certain medications, smoking and family history.

Symptoms

Cataracts usually start out slowly with little impact on your vision. You may notice a little blurriness or cloudiness, light from a lamp or the sun may seem too bright, the glare from oncoming cars may give off more glare than before. Many people say it’s like looking through a dirty car windshield. If you have any of these symptoms or notice any trouble with your vision, make an appointment with Dr. Ward at Lake Nona Eye Care before it gets worse.

Cataract Prevention

Cataracts is one of the largest causes of treatable blindness worldwide, which is why it’s so important to get regular eye exams.

There have been many studies surrounding whether cataracts can be prevented. Research suggest nutritional supplements and a healthy diet can reduce your risk.

A recent 10 year study showed a high dietary intake of carotenoids lutein, vitamin E and zeaxanthin were associated with a decreased risk of developing cataracts.
