Our eyes are susceptible to infection, disease and other damaging issues, Unfortunately, most eye impairment are not reversible, the key is preventing any damage. Here are a few preventative measures and dangers to avoid.

Ultraviolet Exposure

More than just an accessory, sunglasses reduce the sun’s damaging rays. Ultraviolet light can cause many eye diseases, for example macular degeneration and cataracts. Sunglasses are especially important in sunny Central Florida, the sun’s rays can reflect off many surfaces so they should be worn in the snow, sand and water.

What to look for when buying sunglasses

The color or how dark the sunglass lenses are do not determine how much UV protection they provide. Ensure the sunglasses are specifically labeled they protect from ultraviolet UVA and UVB. If you’re not sure if your current sunglasses protect and UV light, bring them in to Lake Nona Eye Care and one of our team members can help.

Eye Strain

That tired nagging feeling behind your eyes is a symptom of eye strain, it can cause headaches, fatigue and focusing issues. Giving your eyes a break is the best remedy, stop what you’re doing and give you eye a chance to relax. According to the American Optometric Association, “When it comes to protecting eyes and vision from digital eye strain, taking frequent visual breaks is important. Practice the 20-20-20 rule: when using technology or doing near work, take a 20-second break, every 20 minutes and view something 20 feet away.”

Routine Eye Exam

Unfortunately, many eye diseases cannot be cured, but many of them can be treated and prevented. The American Optometric Association recommends having a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year, “Periodic eye and vision examinations are an important part of preventive health care. Many eye and vision problems have no obvious signs or symptoms. As a result, individuals are often unaware that problems exist. Early diagnosis and treatment of eye and vision problems are important for maintaining good vision and eye health, and when possible, preventing vision loss.”
