Working in the Orlando/Lake Nona area can be stressful! It can take its toll on your vision. Symptoms of eye strain can include headaches, difficulty concentrating, sensitivity to light, stiff shoulders, back or neck, fatigue, burning or itchy eye, dry or watery eyes, blurred vision, and tired eyes.

Here are a few things you can do to reduce eye strain.

Excessive lighting can be an issue, to reduce eye strain ensure overhead lighting isn’t any brighter than the computer screen.

Blurred vision and eye strain can be caused by sitting too close to the computer screen.

Lower resolution and old monitors can also be the culprit. Eye fatigue can be reduced by upgrading to a flat panel heigh resolution display.

Do you sit in your chair with your back rounded, head tilted back and chin jutting forward, to get closer to the computer screen? This is called ‘turtling’, if you have a difficult time seeing the computer with good posture, it is time to have a comprehensive eye exam.

Eye strain increases when you lean closer to your computer screen, for example, if your mouse is too far away.

What kind of chair do you sit in? An ideal chair should not only be comfortable, but should have good back support, allow you to sit upright and be an appropriate distance from the computer screen.

Routine Eye Exam. Unfortunately, many eye diseases cannot be cured, but many of them can be treated and prevented. The American Optometric Association recommends having a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year, “Periodic eye and vision examinations are an important part of preventive health care. Many eye and vision problems have no obvious signs or symptoms. As a result, individuals are often unaware that problems exist. Early diagnosis and treatment of eye and vision problems are important for maintaining good vision and eye health, and when possible, preventing vision loss.”
