Though we may not realize, some of our nightly routines can be harming our eyes and health of our vision. Lake Nona Eye Care recommends a few helpful tips for better vision and a good night’s sleep.

Before You Go To Sleep Take Out Your Contacts

Business woman with tired eyes and stressThough you may not want to take out your contacts after a long day, it is a very important step! Lack of proper contact lens hygiene can quickly lead to an infection, it’s also the reason almost one million Americans seek medical attention from an eye doctor.

So, though it may be tempting, only wear your contact lenses for the prescribed amount of time. Serious consequences can occur, such as permanent vision loss. Short term side effects include; sore, red eyes and blurred vision. Contact lenses deprive our eyes of oxygen because they rest directly on the eye.

Unless you have specific extended wear lenses, don’t sleep with them in your eyes. If you accidentally fell asleep with them, moisten them with an eye drop solution, safe for contact lenses, before taking them out.

Take a Break From Electronics and Smartphone Before Bed

You may not realize it, but, your cell phone, laptop and TV all emit ‘blue light’, it’s the same light the sun emits. This light cues the natural cycle of our body, when to sleep and when to wake. So, realize when you scroll through your laptop before bed, it actually causes your brain to react just like it would to sunlight, it has been even linked to insomnia.

Getting Enough Sleep

Getting enough quality sleep is an important factor in your overall health and your vision. Lack of sleep can cause dry eyes, eye twitching, blurred vision and dark circles.

Long term health issues from lack of sleep include, weight gain, high blood pressure, depression and even stroke.

Routine eye exams are also an important step for healthy eye, especially if you wear contact lenses on a regular basis. Contact us today for an appointment with Dr. Ward with Lake Nona Eye Care.
