There are many reasons why eyestrain can cause headaches

Headaches are often caused by eyestrain. Eyes have many small muscles, when they have to work harder than normal it can result in a number of vision problems, dry eyes, headaches, blurred vision, tired eyes, even neck and shoulder pain. Eye strain can be caused by vision issues such as:

Farsightedness: Known as Hyperopia, is a common type of refractive error. Where things in the distance can be seen clearly, but objects up close seem blurry. Since this occurs slowly, some people don’t even notice they have a vision problem.

Astigmatism: The cornea in the eye has an irregular shape. This can cause a number of vision issues, including blurred vision. If you find yourself squinting a lot, this may be the cause.

“As more people spend their days at work on a computer and their free time on handheld devices, doctors of optometry are seeing more patients who are experiencing digital eye strain,” said Steven A. Loomis, O.D., president of the AOA. “The problem can be relieved by taking simple steps. Just looking away from the computer for brief periods of time throughout the day can help with discomfort and long term eye problems.”

It is important to correct any vision conditions, if you already wear contact lenses or prescription glasses and are having frequent headaches or other symptoms, your prescription may need to be updated.
