Many people living in the Lake Nona/Orlando area have problems with their vision, but few actually go to the eye doctor. There are many factors that impact our vision, from our environment, genetics, to our age. Eye exams are vital, they can catch problems before any vision is lost.
Almost two thirst of adults living in the United States report they have vision problems, but only one in eight have their eyes examined
According to a survey released by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, “nearly two out of three American adults report having eye or vision problems. A significant percentage of them, however, fail to seek medical attention in the form of regular, sight-saving eye exams.”
The American Academy of Ophthalmology goes on to say,
U.S. Adults Do Not Get Eye Exams as Often as Recommended. The survey results emphasize a need for more education about the importance of medical eye exams. Findings showed that 64 percent of adults had at least one or more of the following issues with their eyes or vision:
Difficulty seeing at night
Blurry vision
Reading up close
Flashes of light
Red, watery eyes
Double vision
Despite experiencing some level of impairment, only 13 percent admitted they had been seen by an ophthalmologist.
Annual Eye Exams
Your first defense for keeping healthy vision is an annual comprehensive eye exam. The retina, or the back of the eye, is the only place in your body that gives doctors a close-up view of your blood vessels and nerves without the need to be cut open. This makes a routine eye exam very useful for detecting important medical issues as well as eye issues at their earliest stages, Glaucoma, Cataracts, Macular Degeneration, Tumors, and Diabetes that can lead to Diabetic Retinopathy and other diabetes related eye issues.
Eight out of ten people who have vision loss, if they had taken preventative measures or treatment, they could have saved their sight.
