Pink Eye or Conjunctivitis
Symptoms include swelling and redness of the membrane that lines the surface of the eye and eyelid. When this clear lining of the eye becomes irritated the eye becomes swollen and red.
Causes of Pine Eye include allergies, chemicals, fumes, smoke, dry eyes, viral or bacteria infections.
Solution: Since Pink Eye is a viral infection, there isn’t an easy fix. Be proactive and combat pink eye by washing hands and not sharing personal items.
Cataracts
Symptoms include cloudy vision, difficulty with night vision, sensitivity to glare and light. Cataracts affect over 60% of adults over the age of 60.
Causes of cataracts include age, diabetes, eye trauma, long term use of some medications such as steroids.
Solution: Cataracts usually progress slowly, your best defense is regular eye exams and updating your eyeglass or contact lens prescription.
Dry Eyes
Symptoms include red irritated eyes, sensitivity to light, eye fatigue, and burning eyes. Over 48% of Americans experience symptoms of dry eyes.
Cause of dry eye includes medications, environmental factors, eyelid problems and lack of adequate tears.
Solution: Prescription eye drops can act as artificial eye drops to lubricate the eye. There is also an insert that can be placed in the eye to release lubrication into the eye on a continuous basis.
Primary Open Angle Glaucoma
Symptoms include a slow loss of peripheral vision. Those with advance stages experience tunnel vision.
Cause includes an increase pressure within the eye due to a buildup of fluid.
Solution: Early detection is key, if caught early eye drops and medication can help reduce fluid buildup and preserve vision. There isn’t a cure for glaucoma and if not caught early it can cause permanent damage.
Astigmatism
Symptoms include blurred and distorted vision because the cornea and are not completely round.
Cause of astigmatism isn’t known at this time.
Solutions include regular eye exams and prescription eyeglasses and contact lenses.
