With thousands of contact lens wearers in the Lake Nona area, it is imperative to use proper contact lens hygiene, which means regular cleaning and following the recommended schedule for disposing them.

The Orlando News 6 recently published an article about a woman who shocked the medical staff with 27 disposable contact lenses in her eyes.

“When she was seen two weeks after I removed the lenses she said her eyes felt a lot more comfortable,” specialist trainee ophthalmologist Rupal Morjaria said. “She thought her previous discomfort was just part of old age and dry eye.”

Morjaria said she and her colleagues found 17 lenses clumped together as she was injecting anesthesia, and ended up recovering 10 additional lenses!

The Doctors said she didn’t even complain about all the contact lenses in her eyes, she was more concerned about her cataracts.

For safe and effective vision correction with contact lenses, it is important to take a few precautions to reduce the risk of infection.

Properly store and handle your contact lenses. This includes washing your hands before you touch them, storing them in appropriate contact lens solution and properly rinse them after you take them out.
Properly disinfect contact lenses. This includes not using tap water to clean lens case or the lenses themselves. When storing contact lenses in a case, never add new solution to old solution.

Take out your contact lenses when you swim in a pool, ocean, lake or enter a hot tub.

If you have a history of an eye injury or trauma to your cornea, this puts you at a higher risk of infection.

Unless prescribed by a doctor, don’t sleep with your contacts in your eyes.

If you feel your eye is becoming infected, stop wearing your contact lenses and call Lake Nona Eye Care.
