April is stress awareness month, a good time to think about our eyes and how much stress we put them through without even realizing. While everyone experience some type of stress in our fast pace life, it is important to take care of our eyes and visit the eye doctor regularly. Even if you can see just fine, many eye problems don’t have any symptoms, the earlier a problem is diagnosed and treated the better.

Computer vision syndrome is a growing problem in Central Florida

According to recent studies, as much as 90% of those who use computers throughout out the day (some for just 3 hours a day) whether for recreation or work, resulted in some type of eye symptoms, tension headache, neck and back pain, blurred vision, and dry, burning, or itchy eyes.

A recent article in the New York Times, Computer Vision Syndrome Affects Millions, reports, “One reason the problem is so pervasive: Unlike words printed on a page that have sharply defined edges, electronic characters, which are made up of pixels, have blurred edges, making it more difficult for eyes to maintain focus. Unconsciously, the eyes repeatedly attempt to rest by shifting their focus to an area behind the screen, and this constant switch between screen and relaxation point creates eyestrain and fatigue.”

The article goes on to say, reduced frequency of blinking is another common problem. While 17 blinks or more a minute is normal, this is often reduced significantly when on the computer, to about 12 to 15. This can result in irritated and dry eyes.

The distance the eyes are from the computer is also important.  It is recommended the eyes be about 20 to 26 inches away from the screen to be able to focus comfortably. The closer or further away they are, the harder they have to work.

Glare, improper lighting and font size can also attribute to the problem. To reduce eye strain remember the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, give your eyes a 20 second break by looking at something 20 feet away.

Most importantly, have regular comprehensive eye exams. Your vision is too precious to take for granted.
