Many patients who schedule their eye exams with the optometrists at Lake Nona Eye Care have questions and concerns others may have, so we want to share them.

Does working on the computer for most of the day hurt my eyes?

While it may not lead to eye damage, spending an extended time staring at a computer screen is the main cause of headaches, fatigue, and eye strain. Give your eyes a well deserved break with the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, take a 20 second break from looking at the computer, and look at something 20 feet away.

My eyes have been very dry lately, do you know why?

There are many reasons why eyes become dry. It can be something as simple as the weather, the side effect of new medication, or even aging. To ensure it is nothing more, it is best to have it checked out by a doctor.

Can I sleep in my extended wear contact lenses?

Your cornea needs oxygen, without it you can put your eyes at risk for developing infections. Developed to allow your eyes to breath, extended wear contacts are created with silicone hydrogel. So while it is safe to wear them longer, it is best to give your eyes a break and take them out while you sleep.

Is a comprehensive eye exam really necessary?

A comprehensive eye exam does much more than ensure your retina is healthy. It often detects early signs of high blood pressure, diabetes, an autoimmune disease, thyroid problems, and much more. While it typically takes an hour and dilating your eyes, it is well worth it!
