As we start the new year, the family at Lake Nona Eye Care want to take this opportunity to spread the word about ‘the sneak thief of sight”.

January is National Glaucoma Awareness month. The National Eye Institute projects the number of people living with Glaucoma will increase by 58 percent, reaching 4.2 million by the 2030.

“Over 3 million Americans, and over 60 million people worldwide, have glaucoma. Experts estimate that half of them don’t know they have it. Combined with our aging population, we can see an epidemic of blindness looming if we don’t raise awareness about the importance of regular eye examinations to preserve vision. The World Health Organization estimates that 4.5 million people worldwide are blind due to glaucoma,” according to the Glaucoma Research Foundation.

Early detection of Glaucoma, with a comprehensive dilated eye exam, is critical. Since there are virtually no symptoms. In fact, vision loss can be as high as 40% without even being noticed.  This type of vision loss is permanent, which is why it’s so important to spread the word.

“Glaucoma is an eye disease that damages the optic nerve that carries images of what your eyes see to your brain. Left untreated, it can result in loss of peripheral (or side) vision, resulting in what is sometimes called ‘tunnel vision’. It is mostly caused when fluid pressure slowly builds up in the front of your eye,” the Lighthouse Guild.

While there is currently no cure for Glaucoma, early detection and treatment can slow the progression and prevent additional vision loss.

Raise Awareness

Talk to your family and friends about Glaucoma. Vision loss begins with side or peripheral vision, which is why it’s not usually noticed until vision loss is significant.
