While having an eye exam may not be on the top of many Orlando residents ‘to do list’, but it should. A comprehensive eye exam can detect more than vision change.
Changes in vision happen gradually over time, so much so that most people don’t even notice. An optometrist performs many tests that rule out any eye related concerns and disorders such as cataracts, glaucoma, and rental problems.
A Comprehensive Eye Exam Can Also Detect Health Issues
Alzheimer’s
Affecting over 5.1 million Americans, Alzheimer’s is a degenerative disease that results in memory loss and thinking skills. New research has revealed, “A simple eye test could diagnose early stage Alzheimer’s disease. Two studies (one in the United States and one in Australia) identified a biomarker for the disease that can be located in the retina and lens of the eye. Researchers stated that both methods were highly accurate in differentiating between healthy volunteers and those who may be in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. The key indicator for Alzheimer’s disease is a sign of beta-amyloid protein, which clumps in the brains of Alzheimer’s sufferers,” according to Your Sight Matters.
Diabetes
Diabetes affects the small blood vessels in the retina. During an eye exam the small capillaries the doctor may detect a yellowish fluid or even blood leaking from these blood vessels, a condition called diabetic retinopathy.
Hypertension
High blood pressure can be detected if the blood vessels in the eye have any tears, kinks, or bends.
High Cholesterol
Elevated cholesterol can seen as a yellowish color in the cornea or plaques found in the capillaries in the retina.
