While the idea of contact lenses has been around since 1508, the first modern contact wasn’t created till 1887. But we have come a long way since then! Today innovative lenses are available for several vision conditions

Light Sensitive Contact Lenses

New technology has pioneered a way for contact lens wearers to benefit from the advantages of transition lenses. Protecting the eyes from the harmful UV rays from the sun and the blue light rays of digital devices and some indoor lighting.

These light sensitive contacts adjust to the amount of light with a dynamic photo chromatic filter. The light entering the eye is regulated and kept more uniform, protecting the eyes.

Though they are not made to replace your sunglasses because it will only be protecting your corneas. The rest of your eyes will still need coverage.

Smart Lenses

By the year 2040 is is expected that there will be over 640 million people in the world suffering with diabetes. New digital contact lenses will monitor intraocular pressure, helping manage those with diabetes, glaucoma, and even some cancers.

The contact lenses will be able to measure small changes in the eye’s volume, as the pressure changes. Other developments include drug dispensing lenses.  This will not only help the patient receive high quality of care, but also how doctors will treat conditions.

Another device has a tiny chip embedded in the lens that will monitor glucose levels. Alerting the patient when blood sugar levels become too low or high with a LED display. Though this technology would greatly improve the quality of life for many people suffering with diabetes, it is still far from clinical trials.

Telescopic Contact Lenses

This new technology is being worked on by a team at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, can someday help those with macular degeneration. It uses tiny aluminum mirrors and a polarizing filter to make the light bounce in a specific way. Allowing the wearer to just wink their eyes to see objects 2.8 times larger, similar to a camera.
