It may be natural to need glasses as we get older. It typically starts around age 40. It’s called presbyopia, when the crystalline lens in your eye undergoes changes and becomes less flexible. Making it difficult to focus on things up close. Reading starts to be more difficult. It could be that nagging headache you get after working on the computer all day. Eye strain could be the cause.

So, you pick up a pair of reading glasses at the store for those times you find particularly challenging. It can be very inconvenient to remember them or you need stronger glasses, you don’t like the way they look, or it could be a number of other reasons.

Luckily, there are some options

Multifocal vs Monovision

Technology has come a long way. It use to be contact lenses used to treat presbyopia used different prescriptions for each eye, one for distance and one for up close. Unfortunately, this prevented the eyes from working together.

Multifocal contact lens vision correction allows multiple zones, this way the eyes can work together. They come in a variety of designs. For instance, Concentric bifocal have the distance correction on the outside of the lens and near vision on the inside, or visa versa. Similar to bifocals where the near vision is on the bottom lens and distance on the top.

Progressive technology has made it possible to have multifocal contact lenses with multiple correction zones. Just imagine, not having to wear glasses anymore! Of course, there is an adjustment period, but most people don’t mind it at all, they say it’s just like getting a new pair of glasses.
