Whether you are looking for an eye doctor for updated contact lenses or prescription glasses, a vision exam can detect much more than just problems with your eyes. They can also discover health issues as well as diseases, before someone experiences any symptoms.

A typical eye exam includes several tests. An eye muscle movement test, examination of the outside and inside the eye, a performance test to see how well your eyes work together, depth perception, color and peripheral vision test, check for abnormal eye pressure as well as how the responsiveness to light.

The American Optometric Association stress the importance of eye exams.

“Early diagnosis and treatment of eye and vision problems help prevent vision loss, but it’s only through a comprehensive, dilated eye exam that a complete picture of patients’ ocular health is determinable.”

“The AOA contends there are severe pitfalls in separating purely objective refractive tests or inadequate vision screenings from a comprehensive eye exam, which provides doctors with a complete ocular health assessment.”

To ensure your eyes are visually health a comprehensive examination is performed to test your ocular health and visual system.

This means your eyes may be dilated to examine the posterior portion of your eye where the retina, optic nerve, veins and arteries can be viewed directly, providing a clear picture of the inside of your eye.

Eye drops are administered in each eye, it takes 20 to 30 minutes for the pupils to fully dilate. This may last 2 to 4 hours. During that time your eyes may be sensitive to light and your vision blurry. You may not be able to read clearly and need sunglasses when you leave.

Most insurance plans cover the cost of a comprehensive eye exam, a pair of prescription glasses, and sometimes contact lenses, depending on the coverage.

Though you may not be experiencing vision problems, most people don’t even realize they need corrective lenses,  it is important to get regular eye exams.
