Last week we talked about how important regular eye exams are for both adults and children in Central Florida. That eye exam we seem to neglect making the time for, can save our vision and safeguard our health.

We already went over how good vision goes hand in hand with learning and working. And the growing number of children developing myopia or nearsightedness. As well as, vision screenings are not a substitute for eye exams.

Reason Number 4 Why Everyone Needs Regular Eye Exams

Glaucoma. Known as the ‘Silent Thief of Sight’, because there are no early warning signs or symptoms. This horrible disease sightly sneaks up on it’s victims robbing them of their vision.

“Glaucoma is a disease that damages your eye’s optic nerve. It usually happens when fluid builds up in the front part of your eye. That extra fluid increases the pressure in your eye, damaging the optic nerve,” according to the American Optometric Association.

While early treatment can prevent vision loss, Glaucoma is still the leading cause of blindness for those over 60. It is also affecting more younger people, according to the National Eye Institute, it now affects roughly three million Americans.  This number is expected to double by 2050. Routine eye exams can detect high eye pressure and glaucoma risk factors.

“The Window to Our Soul”

Eye exams can now detect much more than vision problems. Serious health issues such as cancer, high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure and many other ailments, can be detected.

The blood vessels in your retina are observed and evaluated by your eye doctor during a comprehensive exam. They are known to be a predictor for the rest of your blood vessels and your overall health.

If you have diabetes or even prediabetes, annual eye exams are extremely important. The risk of developing diabetic eye disease significantly increases. With no visible symptoms, a routine eye exam can save your vision!
