Optometry plays a big role with patients who are prediabetes and diabetes. Not only as a timely and critical intervention, but also becoming a pivotal team member for the patients’ care.
Facts on diabetes from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention

- Diagnosed: 23.1 million people
- Undiagnosed: 7.2 million people (23.8% of people with diabetes are undiagnosed)

The team at Lake Nona Eye Care wants to be on your side. Timely routine eye care and critical intervention, is vital for diabetic management.
The American Optometric Association recognizes the important role of optometry and patients with diabetes.
“The role of diabetes care for doctors of optometry has not shifted much within the last three decades,” says Michael Dueñas, O.D., AOA chief public health officer. “While the dilated eye exam has been our core diabetes responsibility, a tripled prevalence of diabetes over this same time period, and greater overall morbidity and mortality from the disease, means that doctors of optometry must more fully engage in the extended challenge of diabetes in the U.S.
“Doctors of optometry should seek enhanced multidisciplinary practice opportunities (i.e., associating with health centers and rural hospitals) and work to advance their scope of practice to more fully align their primary care role with their medical training and high levels of patient accessibility,” Dr. Dueñas says.
It is extremely important for everyone to have regular comprehensive eye exams. But there are times when you need to make an appointment with your Optometrist between those routine visits.
