I’m not sure if my child needs glasses, how can I tell? Isn’t the school screening enough? These are questions we get a lot here at Lake Nona Eye Care. Vision is a big part of how our children learn and should be taken very seriously.

American Optometric Association; over 80% of a child’s learning process is through their eyes and recommends children’s receive a yearly comprehensive eye exam. Good vision is a necessary element for reading, writing, seeing the blackboard, sports, and computer work.

Vision Screenings

Though your child may have a simple vision screening at school, they only identify some distance problems. An exam at Lake Nona Eye Care will identify other vision problems that may impede the success of your child. These include, eye alignment, color perception, depth perception, sight threatening eye disease such as retinal pathology and glaucoma, pupils dilated, pressure measurements and the potential need for eyeglasses or contacts.

Signs Your Child May Need Prescription Glasses

Closing one eye or squinting

If your child closes one eye to see something, the angle of the object changes. It can also make their vision clearer if the other eye has poorer vision.

Squinting can also make vision clearer when your child is trying to see something up close or far away. Because it limits the light entering the eye.

Sitting close to the TV or holding books or tablets close to their face can be a sign they cannot see well, maybe nearsighted. Bringing what they are seeing closer to their eyes, makes it come into focus.

Experiencing Headaches or Eye Pain

Headaches and eye pain are common in children who need glasses for farsightedness. Which can be quite painful because their eyes are continuously trying to focus on images close to them.

Frequent Rubbing Their Eyes

Eye rubbing can indicate eyestrain or fatigue. Reducing the strain by correcting their vision will enable your child to focus better.

Vision Is Too Important To Leave Up To Chance

A spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Sumers explains, “many school age children suffer from nearsightedness, or myopia. In fact, a recent study showed over a third of children ages 12 through 17 are nearsighted in the United States. Over 60% of students who have learning disabilities, may suffer from undetected vision issues.”
